Gamebore DTL Grand Prix 2022 – Day 2 3/7/22

And so, after a rather enjoyable (if personally frustrating!) 3 days of shooting, at a top notch ground with first class facilities and very professional staff, the Gamebore DTL Grand Prix is over for another year.

East Yorkshire and Gamebore were hoping for about 300 entries this weekend, but sadly, only around 100 shooters took part over the 3 days, which is understandable with the current economic situation and the number of events taking place at the same time.

They are however determined to grow the event over the next few years to capacity, and for a first run through after a resurrection, Rob, Sean, the referees, and the rest of the team involved did a grand job.

There's a target in this picture somewhere!

The targets were as they should be – very shootable but not easy, needing discipline and concentration to hit well. The traps ran great all weekend with no breakdowns and hardly any no-birds. Everything ran like clockwork and on time. Add to that the very tasty offerings from the Clay Kitchen, and there’s no wonder that the standard of shooting was very high!

All eyes were on the top scorers from yesterday, and whether Mark Shaw and David Priestman could stay out in front. They didn’t have a lot of room, and the chasing pack had some pretty formidable names in it!

The picture started to become clearer in the early afternoon, when the final scores from the early starters began to come in.

Unfortunately for them, Mark and David hadn’t been able to maintain their overnight leads, and more than one missed target saw them drop down the order.

Leapfrogging them into the top spot, and not quite sure how he managed to end up there, was Bob Clarke. A 100/299 today, together with his 99/295 from yesterday, gave him a combined score of 199/594 – a brilliant performance, and a serious marker for the rest to aim for, out of reach for all but a few.

Even more surprising for him, he stayed there! Paul Chaplow and Marty Smith did their utmost to catch him, but just finished short on 593 each.

Then, in 4th overall on 198/591, we find Mark Shaw, his 2nd day not going quite to plan.

Sharing 5th place were Nicky Waghorne and Nigel Chapman on 589. 1 point behind them on 588 each were Lee Wilcoxson and Lewis Holden sharing 7th, with David Priestman right behind them on 587 in 9th.

Rounding out the top 10 were Chris Moule and Paul Turner on 586s.

With Bob securing overall High Gun and Gamebore Champion, there were still shoot-offs required to settle the top positions.

Paul and Marty went head to head for overall 2nd and 3rd, with Nigel and Nicky joining them on the line to settle 2nd and 3rd overall in Seniors.

Video to follow!

After only 1 round of DTL, Paul emerged as the victor over Marty, securing overall 2nd with a convincing display of marksmanship – a perfect 25/75. Nigel did enough to keep Nicky at bay, and finished as 2nd overall in Seniors.

Well shot to them, to all the medal winners, and to everyone else who placed in class and category after the weekends work.

So now, I expect you’d really like to know how I got on today!

The answer to the question is, similar to Friday – a 97/284!

Add that to my 99/292 from yesterday, and you get 196/576. Not really what I wanted, but far from a disaster. It’s about my average for away shoots at the moment, and just means that I have some work to do to regain ground.

I didn’t come away empty handed though - I won a slab of Gamebore DTL Elite cartridges in a random entry number draw, which was a rather pleasant surprise!

Thanks Gamebore!

I’ve wanted to give them a proper try for quite a long time, but they seem very difficult to get hold of down in the South West. At least, I haven’t found a reliable supply that doesn’t involve me travelling for hours.

For now though, I’ll be doing what I can to find some form for the Bisley 300 at the end of July – and the defence of my title!

Thanks once again to Rob, Sean and the staff at East Yorkshire for a great weekend, and to Gamebore for allowing the event to be resurrected, and supporting it in such generous fashion.

I’ll be back next year to have another go, don’t you worry!
